10 Makeup Tips For Hooded Eyes: If you’ve been lucky enough to have hooded eyes like me, then you know how an absolute pain they can be. Learning to master hooded eye makeup was number one on my list when I decided to become a makeup artist, and I’m proud to say that I have mastered all of the tips and tricks out there.

Let’s get technical for a minute. In makeup, the eyes can be divided into three planes: eyelid, crease, and browbone. Some people have a larger lid, while others don’t have a crease. You can have 80% of one plane and absolutely zero of another. The intention of eye makeup (besides just glowing and looking pretty) is to balance the natural shape of the eyes. Balanced eyes have uniform planes: the eyelid, crease, and browbone are all equally visible. The way I’ve learned, each section should take up about a third of the overall eye space.

Hooded eyes are characterized by a sagging browbone, which rests on the top of the eyelid, creating a soft crease. Also Hooded eyes should not be confused with monolids. So Hooded eyes and monolids have lids that are not visible when the eye is open, but monolids protrude without creasing while hooded eyes crinkle too much and don’t have enough depth. For monolids, darker colors should be placed on the cover to help it recede and balance. For hooded eyes, the technique is totally different. If you are still not sure whether your eye is hooded or not, please feel free to use this photo of my naked eye as a reference.

Remember: no eye shape is better than another! Hooded eyes, monolids, and everything in between are all gorg – but as a makeup pro my goal is always to make the eyes pop as much as possible.
